The Best Places for Autumn Apple Picking near Philly

Fall is in full swing in Philadelphia—the leaves are changing from verdant greens to autumn's vibrant auburns and golds, you're craving apple cider and ginger snaps, and pumpkins are popping up on doorsteps all over town. October is the perfect time of year to throw on a scarf and a flannel and visit your nearest, local farm for some pick-your-own fun.

We've selected four farms—one from each PA county surrounding Philly and each an easy drive from downtown. So, whether you're planning to bake a pie, carve a pumpkin, press some fresh cider, or simply pick a peck for snacking, head to one of these local orchards before the harvest is over!

1. Linvilla Orchards – Delaware County, Apples & Pumpkins

Linvilla Orchards is Philadelphia's own version of Disney World when it comes to fall festivals, special events, pick-your-own apples, and pumpkins. They have at least 10 varieties of apples to pick through November. Pick your own apples are paid for by the pound. After picking apples or a pumpkin, head to "Pumpkinland" where you'll find plenty of fun fall events to keep the kids (or adults) busy, including hayrides, corn mazes, pony rides, and more. At the market, you can pick up any type of apple or pumpkin related food your heart desires.

2. Highland Orchards – Chester County_, Apples & Pumpkins_

Head to Highland Orchards this fall to pick a wide variety of apples, and be sure grab some of their famous apple cider doughnuts and pies. They recommend calling to reserve pies ahead of time because they sell quickly. Highland Orchards offers pick-your-own apples through October, with varieties such as Rome, Winesap, Ida Red, Fuji, Granny Smith, Pink Lady, and more. Pumpkins are also available to pick in October. On weekends from now through November, visitors can also take an educational walking tour led by the farm staff, to learn more about the seasonal harvest. And don't forget to grab a doughnut before you leave!

3. Solebury Orchards – Bucks County, Apples

Located in beautiful New Hope, Solebury Orchards is a small local farm that was founded in 1989 by Brian Smith. Smith says the 2015 apple crop looks outstanding and there are plenty for the picking, including 21 varieties throughout the season. The farm also presses fresh cider, which is available for purchase in the market. If you're looking for a low-key, beautiful venue to enjoy a fall day, Solebury Orchards is the perfect place. After your pick, head to downtown New Hope to grab a bite to eat at one of the many cafes along the main street.

4. Freddy Hill Farms – Montgomery County, Pumpkins

Head to Freddy Hill Farms this fall for "Freddy's Fallfest" taking place every weekend in October. The farm offers thousands of pumpkins to pick from in their pumpkin patch, along with corn mazes, hayrides, pig races, a farm zoo, and more. Make sure to taste some of Freddy Hill's famous homemade ice cream, which attracts visitors year-round. If you're looking for more events after pumpkin picking, check out Freddy's Family Fun Center, which includes miniature golf, a driving range, and batting cages.
